Chicago Public Schools’
Lead with CPS
Started in 2019 but re-imagined in 2023, Lead with CPS is Chicago Public Schools’ most comprehensive leadership development strategy to date, with dedicated programs and opportunities for employees districtwide. Historically, CPS had varying supports and programs for staff across roles, with no structured program for staff in the Central and Network Offices.
Maureen was brought on to support a re-launch and expansion of Lead with CPS in 2022, to double down on the District’s commitment to increase equity in career pathways, create transparent talent pipelines, and invest in the continued growth of team members with the ultimate goals of investment in staff retention and, ultimately, students success.
In a multi-department collaboration with the Talent Team, Department of Principal Quality, and Teaching and Learning, a new website was rolled out to transparently showcase all available leadership development program offerings for staff citywide. To build awareness and participation in Lead with CPS programs among staff, the multi-department team met regularly to collaborate on promoting opportunities, new collateral materials were created and are shared regularly, a monthly “Learning Link” e-newsletter for staff showcases opportunities and leadership stories, an in-person “Lunch with a Leader” event series, and much more.
To date, participation in Lead with CPS training, leadership and mentorship programs has increased substantially, and there have been notable culture shifts within teams to better prioritize staff taking the time and energy to participate in their own career development.
